Meeting 1 In The Mountains Of Madness
Questions: 1. Why are the group of men going to this remote area in the world and going into places that have never been explored before? They are looking for resources that they are studying at their university. 2. How is the expedition going to take place if they are so far away from civilization? They have 5 helicopters along with over 50 dogs for sleds and every couple hundred miles they cover, they set up a camp site that they are able to store materials. 3. Who is the main explorer that is leading almost the whole investigation and trip? Professor Lake is leading the whole trip and is taking all of the risks because of how committed he is to the trip and he understands the importance in achieving their data. 4. What significant problem does the group face towards the beginning of the trip that has many thinking is this whole trip worth it? The chopper that they are in breaks down because they traveled so long that the cold air affected the flying conditions. The bad part is that this is the summer and for them to stay into the winter, they would die. 5. What is the group planing on doing to solve this huge situation they have at hand where one of their men is stuck out in the middle of nowhere? Many men are thinking of different ways to go about fixing this because they need to leave two chopper at the camp just in case they need to evacuate, but they also have no idea how they are going to fix the helicopter. The worst part is that Lake wants to continue the mission not thinking about the dangers that are ahead. Describe the main characters in your text. There are only two main characters and they are both scientists who will go to extreme measure to find what they are looking for. The book does not describe what they look like, but how they react to certain situations so the reader can paint a mental picture in what they characters look like. What makes them interesting? What makes them interesting is that they are spontaneous and from what we have read, you can not tell what they are going to do next. What is their story or background? They are both professors at a university in California and are going on expeditions together to collect data for their book they are writing. Why are you drawn to them? We are drawn to them because they act completely different sometimes but then act like they have one mind. Conversely, are there any characters that you just cannot stand? Why not? There are no characters that we can not stand because there are only two characters really with a few small characters having small parts, but they are interesting to follow on their investigation.

Person B (Hans) - This first book club meet was very successful. It began with the food. We ate the Doritos I had brought. After that was started, Eric began sharing the questions he had come up with for the first third of the book. It got us really thinking and also gave us a better understanding of the expedition these characters were about to begin. After his questions, we looked up the topic for the week, which was characters. Eric and I both helped describe the two main characters of the book so far, Professor Lake and Frank Pabodie. These characters seem very interesting and we can't wait to read more about them for the next meeting.
